What is the difference between EDR and XDR?

EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) monitors and responds to threats on individual endpoints — laptops, desktops, and servers. XDR (Extended Detection and Response) extends that coverage across endpoints, email, network, cloud, and identity in a unified platform. XDR correlates signals across all layers; EDR sees only the endpoint.

EDR vs XDR comparison

DimensionEDRXDR
ScopeEndpoints only (laptops, desktops, servers)Endpoints + email + network + cloud + identity
Threat correlationSingle-endpoint view — misses multi-vector attacksCross-layer correlation — detects attack chains
Alert volumeHigh — each endpoint generates independent alertsLower — correlated into unified incidents
Response capabilityIsolate endpoint, kill process, quarantine fileIsolate endpoint + block email + revoke identity + firewall rule
SIEM integrationRequires separate SIEM for log correlationBuilt-in correlation engine; may replace SIEM
Best forEndpoint-focused compliance (HIPAA workstations)Full-stack threat detection across hybrid environments
CostLower per-endpoint licensingHigher — covers more data sources

When EDR is sufficient

  • Your primary risk is endpoint-based malware and ransomware
  • You have a separate SIEM for log aggregation
  • Budget is constrained and endpoint coverage is the priority
  • Your compliance requirement (e.g. HIPAA) focuses on workstation encryption and audit logging

When XDR is the right choice

  • You use Microsoft 365, Azure, or a hybrid cloud environment
  • You need to detect multi-stage attacks that start in email and move to endpoints
  • Your SOC is overwhelmed by alert volume from disparate tools
  • You need a single-pane-of-glass view across your entire environment
  • You are pursuing CMMC Level 2 or SOC 2 Type II certification

How IDENETY MSP deploys EDR/XDR

IDENETY MSP includes EDR/XDR in all three plan tiers. On CORE, EDR provides endpoint-level behavioral detection and automated quarantine. On COMPLETE and Full Stack, XDR extends coverage to Microsoft 365 email, Entra ID identity signals, and network telemetry — all correlated in the managed SIEM. The 24/7 SOC processes alerts across all layers, not just endpoints.

Frequently asked questions

Does my business need EDR or XDR?

If you use Microsoft 365 and have more than 10 employees, XDR is the better choice. Email is the #1 ransomware entry point, and EDR alone cannot see email-based threats. XDR correlates email, endpoint, and identity signals into a single incident view.

Is EDR/XDR included in managed IT plans?

At IDENETY MSP, EDR/XDR is included in all three plan tiers — CORE, COMPLETE, and Full Stack. There is no separate licensing fee. Many MSPs charge EDR as an add-on; IDENETY treats it as a baseline requirement.

Can EDR/XDR replace antivirus?

Yes. EDR/XDR uses behavioral detection, not signature matching, which means it catches threats that traditional antivirus misses — including fileless malware, living-off-the-land attacks, and zero-day exploits. IDENETY MSP removes legacy AV during onboarding and replaces it with EDR/XDR.

What is the difference between EDR and SIEM?

EDR monitors and responds to threats on endpoints. SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) aggregates logs from all systems — endpoints, firewalls, cloud services, and applications — and correlates them into alerts. XDR blurs this line by providing built-in cross-source correlation, but a managed SIEM still provides broader log retention and compliance reporting.
